Breakdown
Nix missed a fairly open touchdown early on the first drive, a 1st and 15 throw from the Tennessee 15. A ball he sailed over his receiver, giving him no chance on the ball. Inaccuracy was a theme for Nix on the afternoon. He settled down a bit in the second half there, however there were more than a handful of throws he made that caused the receiver to make an extraordinary effort when hauling in the throw.
The Tennessee front 4 were an issue all afternoon, making Nix bail from the pocket early and often, his good mobility saves him from a few sacks, but the back end of the defense made him pay under pressure, forcing 2 interceptions and the lone sack being a strip sack and recovery for the Titans.
Nix's lone touchdown pass was a thing of beauty, a 22 yard strike to Courtland Sutton off a double move. A play that seemed like they were preparing the Titans defense for all first half. Nix pulled off a brilliant pump fake/strutter combo with Sutton, Sutton turned up field and past the CB (this probably should have been a defensive holding call) and Nix delivered a perfect ball over the top of the CB for a touchdown. Nix's first "Elite" throw of the year.
Both of Nix's interceptions came off of him misreading the coverage not realizing a CB drifting with a clear out route peeled off it and/or passed it off to a Safety to cover the underneath, his first interception was also a misplaced throw that lead his receiver into a dangerous area leading to the interception.
Nix wasn't very effective using his legs, but one play stands out. a 2nd and 18 in the 3rd Quarter. Nix navigated the pocket well and made 2 defenders miss in the open field, picking up 11 and giving his team a chance to convert the first down on the next play, which they would with a 7 yard completion from Nix.
His last throw of the afternoon was a deep shot incompletion which he overthrew Marvin Mims, he also had Courtland Sutton wide open on the play deep but looks like he had pre-determined his throw. A tough double miss on a 4th down play that could have iced the game.
All told this was a really tough game for Nix, scoring a -2.10/-2.90/-5.00, which would be a "Poor" game by my scoring. With 2 QB's left to grade on the week, this charts in as the worst graded game of week 1.
