A rather disappointing end to the 2024 season greeted Jared Goff and the Lions, with their loss to the Commanders in the Divisional round. Goff was less than stellar in the loss, but the main crux of the issue lied on a banged up defense unable to stop the Commanders.

With Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, and a litany of other changes that came with the 2025 Lions, they opened their season in Green Bay, a team that of recent the Lions have had the number on. So how did Jared Goff fair?

Let's take a look at the breakdown.

Breakdown

  • Let's be frank, the explosiveness from the Lions offense, which was a league leader in explosive plays in 2024 was not there. Goff attempted just 6 throws beyond 10 yards. Goff's best throw came early, a 19 yard corner route to Amon-Ra, a wide open throw but Goff showed good anticipation on the throw.

  • He also made a nice throw to Sam LaPorta which went for 32 yards to start the second half, this had me hopeful for the return of the Lions offense ad Goff made another good throw on that same drive hitting LaPorta once more for 16. But Goff from that point did not complete a single play that charted higher than "Above Average" outside 2 throws, one of them being the throw to Isaac TeSlaa, their final offensive play in the thick of garbage time.

  • Goff completed nearly 80% of his passes, but a whooping 84.6% of his attempts were under ten yards. (25 between 9 and 0 yards, 8 behind the line of scrimmage.) It is fair to say that by either game plan, or Green Bays defense, or a combination of both, led to a VERY vanilla offense. 14 of Goff's completions came to his running back duo.

  • Goff averaged 4.7 YPA and just 4.2 aDOT, well below league average numbers, further showcasing the Lions inability or unwillingness to push the ball downfield. This was his lowest a DOT since week 9 against the Packers, and his lowest YPA since week 10 of the 2021 season against the Steelers (4.6). You have to go back to his rookie year to find any games lower than that.

  • When Goff did miss, it was very bad, with 5 of his 8 incompletions being graded "Poor".

  • The Packers pass rush gave the Lions fits all day, but overall they gave Goff time to throw, a 34.1% pressure rate is a bit high but they still afforded Goff 2.88s time to throw on average. He scored a -1.30/-2.20/-3.50 charting as an lower end "Bad"game grade. A rough start for Goff and John Morton, as they look to rebound against the Bears next week in Detroit.
