What an absolute response from Jared Goff and company, silencing doubters and destroying the Bears 52-21 in Ben Johnson's return to Detroit. Simply put, on offense the Lions could do no wrong, Jared Goff was about as close to perfect on the stat line as one could be, going 23-for-28 for 344 yards, 5 touchdowns and a 156.0 NFL Passer Rating. After failing to score a touchdown until their last offensive play against Green Bay, the Lions scored early and often in route to routing the Bears. How did it all play out?

Let's take a look at the breakdown.

Breakdown

  • Simply put this was essentially a mirror opposite of the Lions week 1 performance, where as in week 1 against the Packers they struggled doing anything explosive, in week 2 against the Bears Jared Goff and the Lions moved the ball at will. A big part of this was allowing just 6 pressures on 30 plays, a pressure rate of just 20.00%, this allows Goff time to process the field and let his receivers find opening in middle of the field.

  • Watching the tape I definitely had the "We're not changing much" vibe from Morton here, this offense looked as good as it did, if not better than when Ben was calling the plays. A lot of play action, deep in's and digs that get exploited by Goff due to his OL giving him the time to exploit them.

  • Speaking of play action, Goff was absolutely killer in play action week 2. Going 11-of-13 for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns. Giving him a perfect NFL Passer Rating of 158.3 and a TPR score of 243.3 on play action.

  • Speaking of TPR now, his 225.2 TPR charts as the highest TPR score on games I have graded, topping Jordan Love's 199.3 TPR that he put up on Thursday night against the Commanders.

  • His two Elite throws both came on deep shots. The first to Isaac TeSlaa, a ball he lofted over a defender into an area where only his receiver could make a play on it. Don't get me wrong, the catch was just as good as the throw. But with the boundary being a second defender here, and depth and anticipation shown with the throw, this is deserving of an Elite throw.

  • His second Elite throw came on the 44 yard touchdown throw to Jameson Williams, a perfectly placed deep shot with 40+ air yards to it, Jamo used his elite speed to split the defense and Goff lofted it to him with accuracy and easy. This was the final dagger, in my opinion, as the Lions never looked back from here.

  • The worst throw on the afternoon was an underthrow to Williams, he had Jamo open on a Deep Out (and I mean WIDE open) but short armed the throw and it ended up falling 3-4 yards short.

  • The rest of the afternoon was nearly spotless, the rest of the negative grades being "Below Average" for fairly standard incompletions. Goff was extremely on point throughout the game, and if the Bears had made it more competitive on offense, giving Goff more snaps to work with (he was sat about midway through the 4th Quarter) I would only assume his game score would have been even better.

  • Jared Goff scored a 2.75/2.15/4.90 charting as an "Great"game grade. A near immaculate response to the week 1 goose egg the Lions and Goff laid. A tough game on the road against one of the AFC's elite in the Ravens, it will be interesting to watch that one!
