After leading the nation in deep ball completion % at LSU in 2019, Joe Burrow finished last in the NFL in 2020 in deep ball completion %. (min. 20% of leader of attempts.) After finishing second in the nation in 2023 in deep ball completion %, Caleb Williams finished 8th worst in the NFL in deep ball completion %. (min. 20% of leader of attempts.) Both QB's obviously in their first year who were behind weak OL's (Burrow 3.8 sacks per game, Williams 4 sacks per game) and were missing a deep threat in one way or another (Burrow no Jamar Chase, Williams no offensive scheme that properly utilized his X.) Obviously not saying Williams is about to be Joe Burrow, mostly providing context. This year will tell us a lot, But Williams deep ball was never close to as bad as it was in the NCAA level that we saw in 2024. Ben Johnson and Co. are going to right that ship.
